Method of Treatment

We have designed various treatment methods to help with TMD. These treatments are meant to:

  • Help you regain normal jaw function
  • Decrease inflammation and pain
  • Improve jaw mobility
  • Improve posture

Improve Jaw Movements

Our therapists use skilled hands-on treatments to gently increase jaw movement and relieve pressure and tension in tissues and joints. This treatment stretches the jaw to restore typical joint and muscle flexibility or break adhesions due to sustained injury.

We take time to teach you special low-load exercises that will strengthen the jaw muscles and restore a natural pain-free motion. We guarantee speedy recovery!

Postural Instruction

Sitting, standing, or walking with your head in an increased forward position puts a lot of strain on the muscles under your chin. This posture causes the lower jaw to pull back and your mouth to remain open even when resting, increasing stress on the TMJ.

Our physical therapist will train you to be aware of your posture to improve the posture of your jaw, head, neck, breastbone, and shoulder. We use scapular strengthening exercises to improve your posture awareness.

Ultrasound

In cases of severe pain, we provide treatments such as electrical stimulation or ultrasound. Ultrasound supplies deep heat to the jaw tissues and improves cellular mobility. If ultrasound is combined with home exercises, it provides excellent pain relief.

Exercise

We aim to restore your regular pain-free joint movements in the shortest time possible. Exercises for your jaw constitute a significant component of your TMD treatment.

Our therapist will prescribe exercises to improve the opening and closing of your jaw.

What kind of physical therapist do I need for TMD & TMJ?

All physical therapists are educated and experienced in treating many conditions and injuries. It would be best to consider a therapist experienced in musculoskeletal issues. Consider a  therapist who is a board-certified clinical specialist - they have advanced knowledge and experience to handle your condition.

How many therapy sessions do I need?

The number of sessions depends on the severity, complexity, and duration of the problem. Most patients take up to 6-8 sessions. Your progress depends on your compliance with home exercises.

How long does it take to heal?

Every patient is unique. Most cases of TMD get better within six to eight weeks. Physical therapy will smoothen the process and help you recover faster.

What is TMD Disorder?

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder is a medical condition that restricts the natural function of the jaw, for example, opening the mouth and chewing, and can cause pain. The TMJ is a hinge joint that connects your jaw to your skull in front of your ear and guides jaw movement.

What causes TMD?

  • Neck and upper back joint dysfunction
  • Clenching or  grinding teeth
  • Habits like nail biting
  • Poor posture
  • Trauma
